Intermittent fasting is an umbrella term for eating patterns that alternate planned periods of eating with periods without energy intake. Some patterns repeat within a day; others place fasting periods on selected days. The definition describes timing, not a diagnosis, treatment, or guaranteed result.
Reviews use intermittent fasting to describe several timing patterns, but the physiological response varies and does not follow one universal clock.[1]
A timing pattern is not a measured state
The start and end of an eating window are observable choices. Ketone production, glucose, insulin, fuel use, and cellular processes are physiological states or signals. They are influenced by more than elapsed time, and a fasting timer does not measure them.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say
Mechanistic reviews help explain how energy availability may relate to shifts in fuel use. Much of that context combines animal, laboratory, and limited human evidence, so it cannot establish an individualized human timeline or prove long-term benefit by itself.
The broad metabolic-switch model is useful as context, but the registered review does not establish a universal threshold or an individualized body measurement.[1]
Human randomized trials ask a different question: what happened to measured outcomes under a defined fasting strategy and comparator? A 2025 network meta-analysis brings those trials together, while preserving important variation in protocol definitions, adherence, duration, and indirect comparisons.
Human outcome evidence is mixed across fasting strategies and does not mean every approach is equivalent or suitable for every person.[2]
Limits and uncertainty
This article does not turn group averages into a personal forecast. Trials differ in who took part, what the comparison group did, how long the intervention lasted, and how consistently people followed it. Those differences matter before applying a result beyond the studied setting.
Long-term safety and benefit remain uncertain, and the evidence summarized by the National Institute on Aging largely does not cover children or adults older than 60.[3]
